The book is a testament to the loss and destruction the individuals of this region have and unfortunately continue to endure. ![]() However, that did not play into my review at all. ![]() I looked forward to finding out how much was inspired by true events and what was fictionalized for the book and the author's note did not disappoint.ĭid I have a harder time than usual getting through this given the current events unfolding in Ukraine? Absolutely. I loved how Kate Quinn showcases how Mila navigates love, loss and leadership. Both were incredibly engaging, and I enjoyed the snippets from Mila's official and unofficial memoirs, which were unique ways to start chapters. Told in two timelines, starting with Mila Pavlichenko's story from student in the library to sharpshooter on the battlefield, as well as Mila's press tour in Washington DC. "The Diamond Eye is beautiful, suspenseful, heartbreaking and inspiring. A post shared by Nikki Marie (opens in new tab) ![]()

With that in mind, I thought it would be more effective to break down my first small delights of 2021 into three parts inspired by quotes from “The Book of Delights.” 1. The concept behind “The Book of Delights” is quite simple, although the consistency of writing daily may be more difficult. Gay begins the book with the opening line: “One day last July, feeling delighted and compelled to both wonder about and share that delight, I decided that it might be nice, even useful, to write a daily essay about something delightful.” As we transition to a new year after such a harsh 2020, I thought it would be meaningful to take in the joy of a fresh start, a beginning that with the push of uncertainty from the pandemic, can help us live every moment to its fullest. Although published in 2019, Ross Gay’s autobiographical “The Book of Delights” is an important reminder of how impactful reflection can be in 2021. ![]() ![]() ![]()
